Free Pattern Friday 15

This is the last of our Free Patterns on a Friday – the Summer Mystery starts on Wednesday July 1st – so we thought something frivolous and fun was needed. It is another available from our Payhip shop and first appeared (as so many others) in British Patchwork & Quilting magazine some years ago.

This was christened a Twist and Turn Toy. It is a series of pyramids sewn together that will rotate to show different faces. Its a great fidget toy for young and old – squeeze it and fiddle with it and fidget it round and round to relieve stress or hand it to a small child who will delight in wearing it as a crown as well as turning it to see all the different patterns.

You can download the pattern from our Payhip Shop here.

If all else fails – use the pyramids as bean bags to practice your juggling! Fill them with rice, lentils, dried peas or beans (just don’t get them wet).

Free Patterns

The Free Patterns tend to get posted to the Craftsy page – no particular reason, they just do – so I thought we’d draw your attention to them and provide them here for you to download now.

Just re-created is the Autumnal Pumpkin which first showed up at Young Quilters many years ago and then went on to entertain an assortment of Brownies and Guides working for their Needlework badges. I’ve made a new one and taken step-by-step photos to put in the patterns – a vast improvement on the sketchy (by hand) drawings of the original.

The Spider has been around now for quite some time but is still proving very popular at this time of year.

This too has been re-written with step-by-step photos.

These really are simple little things to make – you just need some small (about 8 inches square) pieces of felt and scraps of wadding to stuff them with. With half-term looming on the horizon why not download both patterns and spend a quiet afternoon populating the house with spiders (these ones don’t scuttle) and pumpkins.

New pattern

A new pattern has just been added to the Meadowside Designs Craftsy page. It is toy for small children and first appeared in British Patchwork and Quilting magazine’s special issue Inspirational Toy Makes in August 2012.

twisty toy

It is really quick and easy to make by hand or machine and the design changes according to the fabrics used and whether or not you fussy cut a novelty fabric (or two). You can try making it with different fabrics such as velvet and flannels to make a more tactile toy too.

Not only that but it is an excellent ‘stress-buster’ for adults too – twist it, turn it, throw it about it the place (but possibly not towards the best china).

Better yet – it is only $4 (about £2.50) for the full pattern with step by step photos.
